Our story

Built by parents, for parents

We're a couple in our 30s from New Jersey, expecting our first baby girl this fall — and like most parents-to-be, we had a problem. Every name site we found felt like it was built in 2003 and hadn't been touched since.

Our Story

Between running a small business, preparing a nursery, and navigating everything that comes with pregnancy, we simply didn't have hours to scroll through endless alphabetical lists of names we'd already heard a thousand times.

We wanted something that felt like a conversation — something that understood who we are, where we come from, and what we hoped for our daughter. Something that could surface a name we'd never considered but immediately recognize as right.

So we built it. Nomia uses AI to do what those old sites never could: it listens first, then curates. Every list is generated fresh, built entirely around your answers. No two families ever see the same names.

"A name is the first gift you give your child. It should feel like it was made for them — because with us, it is."
— The founders, New Jersey

What We Actually Do

Behind every result is an AI model querying a database of over 3 million names spanning more than 190 countries, cultures, and linguistic traditions — from ancient Celtic roots to modern Scandinavian minimalism to rich West African heritage.

But raw data isn't enough. The 7 questions we ask aren't arbitrary. They're designed around the psychology of naming — the way sound shapes perception, the way meaning anchors identity, the way cultural heritage connects generations. We ask about season because names carry energy. We ask about vibe because a name will be called across playgrounds and boardrooms alike.

The result is a curated list that feels considered, not computed.

The Science Behind the Questions

Naming research shows that the sounds in a name influence how a person is perceived — softer consonants and open vowels tend to evoke warmth and approachability, while hard stops and short syllables convey strength and confidence. We ask about sound preferences because parents instinctively feel this, even if they can't articulate it.

Cultural heritage matters too — not just for honoring lineage, but because names carry centuries of meaning and story. A name rooted in your grandmother's language connects your child to something larger than themselves.

And then there's the emotional dimension. We ask what feeling the name should carry because the moment you call your child's name, you want to feel it. That emotional resonance is something algorithms alone can't manufacture — but the right questions can draw it out.
